Group Advocates Overthrow of US Government

operation american spring

What happens when you mix fundamentalist Christianity with right-wing politics? You end up with a group called Patriots for America. Harry Riley, a retired US military officer, is advocating the non-violent overthrow of the US government.  Riley is calling for what he calls Operation American Spring.

What does Riley hope to accomplish through Operation American Spring?

Phase 1 – Field millions, as many as ten million, patriots who will assemble in a peaceful, non-violent, physically unarmed (Spiritually/Constitutionally armed), display of unswerving loyalty to the US Constitution and against the incumbent government leadership, in Washington, D.C., with the mission to bring down the existing leadership. Go full-bore, no looking back, steadfast in the mission.

Phase 2 - One million or more of the assembled 10 million must be prepared to stay in D.C. as long as it takes to see Obama, Biden, Reid, McConnell, Boehner, Pelosi, and Attorney General Holder removed from office. The senior republican in the US House of Representatives will become Speaker of the House and the US House of Representatives will elect a temporary President and Vice President of the United States. The U.S. Senate will take action to elect a new majority and minority leader.
As required, the U.S. Congress will execute appropriate legislation to convene new elections or U.S. States will appoint replacements for positions vacated consistent with established constitutional requirements.

Phase 3 – Those with the principles of a West, Cruz, Dr. Ben Carson, Lee, DeMint, Paul, Gov Walker, Sessions, Gowdy, Jordan, will comprise a tribunal and assume positions of authority to convene investigations, recommend appropriate charges against politicians and government employees to the new U.S. Attorney General appointed by the new President.

If you look at Phase Three, you will see that Tea Party principles are behind Riley, Patriots for America, and Operation American Spring.

Then there is Michael Scheuer, a former CIA officer and CBS news analyst. Scheuer is advocating the assassination of US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron:

In their palpable desperation, Obama and Cameron will expand the use of those weapons and, by doing so, they will protect the growing power and durability of our Islamist enemies, while undermining the constitutional structure, the rule of law, and the civil liberties which, since England’s Glorious Revolution (1688-89), Anglo-Americans have built and defended against the despotic drift of their rulers with argument, protest, and — if at last needed — violence.

As they head further down the road of losing wars and wrecking Anglo-American liberties, Messrs Obama and Cameron and their supporters in all parties would do well to read the words of the great 17th century English republican Algernon Sidney, a man who was revered on both sides of the Atlantic, who greatly influenced America’s founders, and who was executed by the British Crown for what it described as sedition. “There must therefore be a right,” Sidney wrote,

“of proceeding judicially or extra-judicially against all persons who transgress the laws; or else those laws, and the societies that should subsist by them, cannot stand; and the ends for which governments are constituted, together with the governments themselves, must be overthrown. … If he [a political leader] be justly accounted an enemy of all, who injures all; he above all must be the publick enemy of a nation, who by usurping power over them, does the greatest and most publick injury that a people can suffer. For which reason, by an established law among the most virtuous nations, every man might kill a tyrant; and no names are recorded in history with more honor, than of those who did it. … They [the people] know how to preserve their liberty, or to vindicate the violation of it; and the more patient they have been, the more inflexible they are when they resolve to be so no longer. Those who are so foolish to put them upon such courses, do to their cost find that there is a difference between lions and asses; and he is a fool who knows not that swords were given to men, that none might be slaves….”

Wingnuts? Whack jobs? Crazies? But dare we ignore them? What happens if the various streams of Patriot nonsense come together as a group? While we are busy fighting terrorists over there, we have homegrown groups and individuals that are actively plotting to overthrow the US government and assassinate US political leaders. While we are busy watching the latest reality TV show, white, non-Muslim Americans are plotting to plunge the United States into a civil war. They  are being helped by right-wing Tea Party politicians. These politicians are trying to destroy the Federal government and turn the United States in a real live version of an Ayn Rand novel.

Oh. My. Lack of God. I had no idea that Canada had a soon-to-be third world country to its south. Is this what it’s going to come to? A vocal minority of the population doesn’t like the current leadership so descends on them in force to force them out of office and *then* to find some reason to justify why they were forced out of office?

Ignore them. The John Birch Society has been preaching the same stuff for 50 years.

Purebred–or inbred–idiots. Actually, as someone finally able to get insurance again, AND at a price I can afford, as of Feb. 1st, I’m not feeling at all unkindly about the current administration.

Something similar transpired in the 1930s when tycoons enthralled with fascism and led by the DuPont family tried to stage a coup d’état to overthrow “that communist FDR.” It almost succeeded. Read this for the details. The Business Plot

We recently saw an “Impeach Obama” rally in Georgia. Someone was in military attire, a few people were demonstrating on an overpass . . . talk about distracted driving. A lady driving beside us slowed right down, trying to make eye contact with the demonstrators but we were in her way. So she slowed down even more waiting to connect visually with them, gave a great big smile like she was seeing her long lost friend again for the first time, waved her arm hello and then honked her car horn several times. We’re guessing she agrees to impeaching the President.

There was a police/sheriff presence there as well and they seemed to be trying to talk to the protesters.

I usually make eye contact with these types too so I can give them the finger. :) Last fall we had a group in Bryan that was on the town square with Impeach Obama signs. They were getting a lot of friendly waves and people were honking their approval. I rolled my window down and waved too. :) I know my gesture meant nothing but it sure felt good. :)

I agree, they’re completely insane. But, I am actually for this, though not as they’ve prescribed or for their reasons. We definitely need another revolution. The politicians have all sold us out while our people die in the streets. But, as Bill Maher said, it’s not going to happen, “the government has drones”.

Wow, this reminds me so much of Brian Wood’s DMZ comics. Perhaps this is how it all begins?

Riley hopes to field “as many as ten million” “Patriots”? I’d be surprised if he could get ten thousand. Most of these people have hyper-inflated ideas of just how many people agree with them at all, much less how many are willing to physically join their little crusade.

That said, I definitely think someone should keep an eye on these idiots. Although I don’t believe for a moment they have enough followers to stage an actual coup d’etat, it only takes one nut with a gun and a clear line of sight to fuck things right up.

Yep, I think their numbers are quite small but as long as they have guns they can cause quite a problem.

I’ve been worried about this since President Obama’s election. When you read the utter nonsense these people espouse, you tend to underrate them. I’m sure, had I run into Timothy McVeigh, and heard him babble about the “oppression” he was enduring, I would have written him off, until Oklahoma City.

I know the FBI is watching these groups. And when that is discussed, these groups are outraged. How dare anyone put them under scrutiny for threatening the President, Senate Majority-Leader, House Minority-Leader and Attorney-General! How dare anyone imply that planning to overthrow a democratically-elected government might be a crime! They’re “patriots,” not terrorists!

    Yeah, right.

If there are 10 million of them, they could just, you know, organize, field candidates, vote in the next election, and create a wing-nut utopia without too much disruption of their personal lives. The CONSTITUTIONAL American way. But, I think even they know, deep in their brain stems, they’d lose, which they simply can’t tolerate.

Also, I’m not clear on what leverage they’ll use to overthrow the gov once they get to Washington. Mill around on the Mall? Refuse to use public restrooms? It could get nasty.

Make no mistake, though, there are incredibly angry armed wing nuts who have got their arsenals and, by God, they need to shoot something or somebody. A quick google search brought up this article on The Raw Story web site: ‘Christian American Patriots Militia leader: We now have the authority to shoot Obama’.
