This is the ninety-fourth installment in the Songs of Sacrilege series. This is a series that I would like readers to help me with. If you know of a song that is irreverent towards religion, makes fun of religion, pokes fun at sincerely held religious beliefs, or challenges the firmly held religious beliefs of others, please send me an email.

Today’s Song of Sacrilege is Sleep on the Floor by The Lumineers.

Lyrics

Pack yourself a toothbrush dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip, take all of your savings out
‘Cause if we don’t leave this town
We might never make it out
I was not born to drown, baby come on

Forget what Father Brennan said
We were not born in sin
Leave a note on your bed
Let your mother know you’re safe
And by the time she wakes
We’ll have driven through the state
We’ll have driven through the night, baby come on

If the sun don’t shine on me today
And if the subways flood and bridges break
Will you lay yourself down and dig your grave
Or will you rail against your dying day

And when we looked outside, couldn’t even see the sky
How do you pay the rent, is it your parents
Or is hard work dear, holding the atmosphere
I don’t wanna live like that

If the sun don’t shine on me today
If the subways flood and bridges break

Jesus Christ can’t save me tonight
Put on your dress, yes wear something nice
Decide on me, yea decide on us
Oh, oh, oh, Illinois, Illinois

Pack yourself a toothbrush dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip, take all of your savings out
Cause if we don’t leave this town
We might never make it out

I’m torn. Loved the tone and what lyrics I understood of this song. He mentions Jesus Christ… Then I look up the lyrics and yes, sacrilege. Now I’m thinking, hastily and regretfully, should I not listen to one of my favorite bands????

The irony…..they are Christian, unless they are latest to walk away over the last few years.

Kinda shocking lyrics, until I think about the band from Cincy…all in the ministry now or past, and the first lyric of the first song is “Drunk as hell, I burned my church to the ground”. Sometimes lyrics have a meaning NOT obvious in the lyric sheet.

It’s common knowledge in the Christian “woke” community that for anyone to make it big in the entertainment industry, entertainers must sell their souls to Satan, literally.

So, why make a song opposing themselves by against The Lord Jesus? Because they have to, to prove their loyalty to their new master.

Every great entertainer must do this if they’re going to be given the glory of the world from the entertainment industry.

Not common knowledge, Randolph; common belief. There is no evidence for Satan, and if there ever was a Jesus I believe that he was a mortal who has been dead for a very long time.

Thank you for this website. I was listening to the Lumineers because they have a great melody. Nevertheless, I’m deleting everything I have of them know.

Wow, y’all are a bunch of b&+chs. Seriously. Who among you has not doubted your belief at dohe point. Especially when you consider the song is about leaving a situation that neither is feeling at the moment. You know what they say, if you treat your kids right, they always come back. Religion is possibly the same. Judgemental folks like yourselves make no one wants to come back. Something to ponder for the future.

I believe the ‘born in sin’ doctrine was a distortion of the truth by the early church, one of several man-made teachings that kept common people “in their place”, i.e. fearful of eternal damnation and therefore subservient to the self-serving edicts of the church as it amassed ever-greater power and wealth over the centuries.

Bruce, I see that you were once a pastor for many years and are now an atheist. So, does you life have meaning and purpose now that you don’t believe in God? What caused you to leave the Christianity?

My life has more meaning and purpose than it did when I was a Christian. Why? There’s no after life, so the present life I do have is vitally important to me. One need not believe in God to find meaning and purpose. Billions of people have meaning and purpose in their lives without the Christian deity.

Once you start down the rabbit hole of biblical authority and accuracy, and question how doctrine was created and how the.Bible was compiled, you come to that point where you have to ask what, exactly, is true? And who gets to define it? If you start setting aside parts of the Bible, then how do you determine what to discard? If you discard certain teachings of the Catholic Church because they are distortions to amass power, then how do you know what to throw out and what to keep? The core doctrines essential to Christianity came from the Catholic Church, so which are correct and which are man made to control the masses?

Are you saying the early church came up with the concept of “original sin”? Because if so, there are so many verses in the Bible that tell of all humans who are born sinners from the beginning.
