Steven and Zsuzsanna Anderson and their eight children. November 2015

This is the seventy-fourth installment in The Sounds of Fundamentalism series. This is a series that I would like readers to help me with. If you know of a video clip that shows the crazy, cantankerous, or contradictory side of Evangelical Christianity, please send me an email with the name or link to the video. Please do not leave suggestions in the comment section.  Let’s have some fun!

Today’s Sound of Fundamentalism is a clip from a sermon preached Steven Anderson, pastor of Faithful Word Baptist Church, Tempe, Arizona. Note all the children on the front rows.

Bruce, this guy has such a hateful message, are you not worried that giving this hateful, bigoted bastard more attention only fuels him? I think he thinks that the only bad publicity is no publicity.

I wonder about this sometimes. I honestly think Stevie is an attention whore who will say anything for a little notoriety. He loves being on TV and getting interviewed for talk shows. No one is spying on him. These are videos that he personally puts on YouTube for public consumption. He wants people to see him, and he LOVES the notoriety. He’s like every insecure narcissist out there: completely unhappy unless someone is “persecuting” him.

Someone as hate-filled and shouty about it as this man is in denial. . .My guess is, within a year or two, he’ll be found in a compromising position with a rent-boy. He wouldn’t be the first.

So much can be learned just from looking at body language. This photo is an interesting case study. There are only a few genuine smiles here, and one of them is NOT the wife’s. Her face screams depression. Look at how her body arches AWAY from him. She looks supremely uncomfortable next to him. The looks on the faces of the oldest boy and girl just scream “I want to vanish into thin air as soon as humanly possible.” The one son is CLEARLY not comfortable being on his father’s lap.

And how many of those kids are bow-legged? Are we sure they’re getting enough to eat/proper nutrition?

The Anderson’s have 9 kids now. Also I know someone who is digging into Anderson’s financial situation at the church. Don’t be surprised if it comes out he’s a lying liar with squishy finances..

    Hi Bruce,

Anderson is a crackpot whose hatred towards gays and lesbians knows no bounds. People , like Anderson, who fill their lives with hatred towards minorities are doing severe damage to their emotional well-being. If Anderson wants to do this to himself, okay, but the trouble is he is stirring up hatred in fellow Fundamentalists and doing damage to their emotional well being.

    Shalom,

    John Arthur

Anderson has planned congregations in the Netherlands, Ireland and Sweden, coming May. There’s talk of denying him access to the country. I pity his nine children, having to live with the hatred this man spreads. Reminds me of the nine children of Goebbels. Look what happened to them.

Praise be to God for awesome preachers like Pastor Steven Anderson and others like him who have the chutzpah to preach the ENTIRE Bible, not just little bits & pieces of it!

You mean the Steven Anderson whose church is embroiled in controversy and may be moving on to a new church?

Anderson doesn’t preach the “Bible.” Anderson is a homophobic bigot. THAT’S his gospel.

You can preach the entire Bible, but that doesn’t make it true. It’s one of the most erratic, immoral and nonsensical anthologies of ancient religious fiction ever cobbled together, and not worth serious consideration.

So do you believe the entire bible? This is a book that is largely written by very violent, bloodthirsty and ignorant savages who created god in their own likeness. e.g. 1 Sam.15:1-3 and please read the whole chapter. This chapter justifies genocide including the murder of little children and babies for something that their ancestors did about 400 years before.

This Samuel ( a supposed, but false prophet) tells King Saul to attack the Amalekites and slaughter the men, women, little children and babies as well as their animals. Saul takes his army and kills the men, women, little children and babies and most of their animals. He saves alive king Agag and the best of the animals and present them to Samuel.

Samuel says that God has rejected Saul as king because he did not do a thorough enough job. He failed to obey God. Then this bastard, Samuel, picks up a sword and hacks king Agag to pieces. This is supposed to be the bloody Word of God. What utter nonsense!

Didn’t Jesus say, in the Sermon on the Plain (Luke ch.6), that the followers of God were to love their enemies? Didn’t he also say that the followers of God were to be compassionate or kind( like God is) towards the ungrateful and the wicked? If the Amalekites were enemies of God, why did god command their slaughter?

So it’s impossible to believe the entire bible because some parts contradict others. Why doesn’t Steve Anderson preach the compassionate and peaceful parts of the bible? Why does he focus on the texts of hate that are in the bible?

      Hi Tihstae,

You do know that pastor Anderson can’t even get Jesus right. After all, he was only human. He, too, made mistakes. He believed that God is kind or compassionate even towards the ungrateful and the wicked, yet he believed that god was an eternal torturer (Mat. 25: 31-46). How can any person that is kind believe in everlasting torture in hell for finite “sins” committed in finite time by finite people? So there are not only contradictions in the OT but also in the NT. Anderson’s gospel of hate should be utterly rejected by any humane person. So why don’t you reject his preposterous views?
