Abortion: One Issue Voters

Many people who are outside of the Evangelical/Mormon/Conservative Catholic bubble, are perplexed by continued Christian support of Donald Trump. Trump is a vulgar man who makes jokes about sexually assaulting women. Trump is a narcissistic, misogynistic psychopath whose life is barren of anything normally associated with people of faith. Yet, millions of Christians plan on voting for him come election day. Why is that? One word, abortion! It’s not that Trump is prof-life. He’s not, and I suspect if investigative reporters dig far enough into Trump’s life they will likely find a trail of abortions. But, Christians are c-o-n-v-i-n-c-e-d that Trump will make it harder for women to have abortions, and maybe, just maybe, he will appoint conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices who will vote to overturn Row v. Wade.

The following photographs were shot a few miles from my home. I do not know who these people are, but based on the signs in their yard, they are one issue voters.

I am against abortion in most cases. The issue of abortion is the only one on which I agree with conservatives. However, I have the impression that Hillary Clinton at least has decent motives for her pro-abortion stance. I believe Donald Trump is just pretending to be pro-life in order to court evangelicals. It is both fascinating and horrifying to watch how religious leaders have created this story of Biblical proportions starring Donald trump as the flawed man God is using for his own glooo-ry. Two thirds of the people I know are buying this bullshit, people I used to think were smart.

Goodness, when will people learn that legislating personal morality is an exercise in futility? In this country it all hinges on the opinions and interpretations of 9 individuals (8 currently). Thus, the pendulum of what is legally allowed and disallowed will swing back and forth over the centuries based on the makeup of that bench. So outside of setting common sense boundaries for public safety, why put in place all these restrictions that override personal responsibility?

I saw a commercial from Michigan Right to Life confirming this strategy. It is actually very unlikely that Roe vs. Wade will be overturned, but it is actually the likeliest of cases to be overturned. SCOTUS justices are the only justices that can ignore precedent, but most are disinclined to do so. That said, ever since Reagan Roe vs. Wade has been under the gun, judicial appointments have been tailored to overturn it. (An overturn would be interesting in that state politics would no be the venue to fight/maintain abortion rights. Could the Republican majority/Governorships in many states be at stake?)
For liberals it is also very unlikely Citizen’s United and Heller cases will be overturned. Even though I’ve heard muttering to that effect.

I have noticed several of these one issue voters on social media lately and witnessed the intellectual contortions they engage in to justify their support for Trump.

The vast majority of Christians are unaware that the bible has abortion. I have been challenging Christians with the following post and then watch as they freak out:

I do not understand why Christians claim that God is pro-life. Maybe because they don’t actually read the bible?

God endorsed forced abortion and the murder of children.

“If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse.” – Numbers 5:27

“The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will be killed by an invading army, their little ones dashed to death against the ground, their pregnant women ripped open by swords.” – Hosea 13:16

So why does abortion take precedence over Trump’s appalling boasts about sexual assault, racism, xenophobia, misogyny, ableism, and insults of military service members and their families?

Then sometimes they complain that I have taken those verses out of context. I usually then post a bunch more appalling verses which they continue to justify and claim I need “context.” So the next strategy I use is to post similar violent verses from the koran and bible and ask them to guess which one is acceptable.
