Black Collar Crime: IFB Sunday School Teacher Jonathan Young Accused of Rape

jonathan young

The Black Collar Crime Series relies on public news stories and publicly available information for its content. If any incorrect information is found, please contact Bruce Gerencser. Nothing in this post should be construed as an accusation of guilt. Those accused of crimes are innocent until proven guilty.

Jonathan Young, a Sunday school teacher at Firstborn Baptist Church — an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (IFB) congregation — in Benson, North Carolina stands accused of raping several church girls.  WRAL-5 reports that Young has been charged with ” six charges of first-degree rape of a child, three charges of statutory rape, two charges of first-degree sexual offense and two charges of indecent liberties with a child.” The charges against Young cover alleged crimes committed between 2004 and 2014.

Several former church members allege church leaders knew about Young’s crimes and covered them up. The church denies doing so. Durwood Young, pastor of Firstborn Baptist, had this to say:

I’m heartbroken by it all because it’s unbelievable. I hate if anyone is hurt on either side but the young man is ruined now. I hate it and I don’t know what else to say about it.

What’s unbelievable is that Pastor Young’s first statement is about being concerned for the “young man” whose life has been “ruined.”  The victims aren’t even mentioned outside of Young “hating [the] hurt on either side.” What is this, a sporting event where you have two opposing teams?

Both the pastor and the perpetrator have the same last name. I was unable to ascertain if they are related.

A reader with intimate knowledge of this church and the parties involved has told me that Durwood Young is Jonathan Young’s great uncle. This reader also told me that other people in the church have, in the past, been accused of sexual improprieties. If anyone has information regarding these allegations, please contact me.

I presume you meant this for the Dean Curry posts. To answer your question, yes, I am a judge, I am mental, I am grouchy, I am old, and I am a man. I am not, however, prone to jealousy. There’s nothing in Curry’s life I want. No thank you.

Do you know that false accusations by victims are uncommon? That is true. The leading elder a church I know well is a Judge. He says that when an accusation of sexual abuse becomes known, sometimes others ‘come out of the woodwork’ and try to cash in. True accounts are often verifiable without too much difficulty. However it is almost always possible to prove who is lying – they usually copy one another’s stories and times and places don’t add up. Yes there are fantasists. One is in the news in the UK this week, he’ll probably get a long prison sentence, but comments one reads like ‘How dare you criticise a man of god?’ or ‘I know him’ or ‘I dated his sister…I was at school with him…he preaches good sermons’ are pathetic, subjective and illusory. Abusers are masters of subterfuge, of hiding in plain sight, that’s how they get away with it. I presume, Lets, you are a x-tian but gratuitous personal insults of Bruce do nothing to draw me back to your religion. If I re-convert, will I have to make rude comments on blogs too, cos jesus told me to?

This church is a cult. There was a one-man barber shop not far from the church (the barber is deceased now and the shop is closed). The shop was only open on Fridays and Saturdays. I lived near the shop, so I would get my hair cut there. One Monday I drove by the shop, and noticed they were open. I stopped for a haircut, and there were several men/boys getting waiting to get their hair cut. After the barber had finished with them, I got in the chair. I told the barber I didn’t know he was open on Mondays, and he told me he only opens on a closed day so members of the church can get their hair cut, because they were not allowed to associate with ex-members that get their hair cut there during normal business hours.

Your a liar name this barber because the man you said cut there hair was my grandfather and he had never said a bad word about anyone or someone’s church.
