Today’s Sound of Fundamentalism is a video clip of William Lane Craig explaining the absurdity of life without God — God meaning the Christian deity.
I am seriously tired of evangelists and believers telling me they “know” what it’s like to be an atheist. We humans are the only species on the planet, that we can know at this point, that is aware that we as individuals die. It’s not a fun fact, but it is reality. The universe itself is huge, generally beyond the capacity of many humans to grasp. The brains of humans have evolved over time to deal with many things, but there is not a pressure to evolve in an easy way to deal with death. “Meaning” can be simple or complex philosophically. I figured out long ago that the universe does not care whether I was born or not. I was born because my parents had sex. Snarkily, I need to be thankful that my mother “put out” rather than offering my dad a blow job or a hand job that night, or “I” would not be here and another person who had my parents genes would be if that same egg was fertilized.
“Meaning” is not something inherent in the universe, we get to decide that ourselves. And that terrifies a lot of people. “Meaning” is also something that will change all the time. When I was younger going to school gave me meaning, dating gave me meaning, loving “Star Trek” gives me meaning. “Worshiping” a supernatural being, no matter how that being is defined, does not give me meaning. I get more meaning looking a the lake from the deck of the family cabin.
Just living is important, I don’t need to worry that the universe cares whether I’m here or not.
