Today’s Sound of Fundamentalism is a video clip of IFB evangelist Larry Brown preaching against booze. This sermon was preached years ago at The Crown College of the Bible.
Bruce Gerencser, 66, lives in rural Northwest Ohio with his wife of 45 years. He and his wife have six grown children and thirteen grandchildren. Bruce pastored Evangelical churches for twenty-five years in Ohio, Texas, and Michigan. Bruce left the ministry in 2005, and in 2008 he left Christianity. Bruce is now a humanist and an atheist.

Words cannot Express how much I loathe those melodramatic Southern fundamentalist preachers. Scaring the devil out of congregants is what they love most.
My thoughts exactly, and IMO, Ralph Sexton and Jimmy Swaggart are among the worst of them!
He would have been a hoot at the Wedding of Cana to say the least.
I have no doubt that he believes the “wine” was actually a first century version of Welch’s grape juice. ? This is a common belief among IFB preachers. It wasn’t for me. The text and underlying Greek are clear: the wine was fermented. I still preached against drinking alcohol, but did so from a social/testimony perspective. I was 40 years old before I drank alcohol for the first time.
Yeah it’s kinda hard to conclude the wine at the Wedding of Cana was anything other than wine. I certainly think excessive drinking is a scourge however to teach the Bible forbids drinking is simply without merit.
Especially when you feel like you need to drink to get all that anti-drinking (anti-entertainment, anti-whatever) bull gipp off your mind!!
Booze is a curse because it is a valid contender for the sick excesses offered by evangelical religion. It can ruin you in excess and takes the money the church wants. Choose your poison if you need to hurt yourself and abuse your children. What this sick fuck did to those children with his dirty pyrotechnics was sick, depraved and look at him at the end, so proud of himself for harming them! I’d love to kick his sorry ass down the aisle, praise Jesus.
when you’ve been outside the system for so long, you easily see how sick and abnormal all of this is. but when you’ve been in the system for years or maybe a lifetime, this is your normal. I remember having friends come to church w/me when I was a kid, and they found the whole thing frightening and weird, from the screaming and dancing down to the words of our songs. I started to realize that my feelings of discomfort w/the Pentecostal services were not because I hated god, but because it was abnormal and my instincts even as a child were telling me. I was always to told that only selfish god haters thought the Pentecostal way was weird. now I know better. feel so sorry for people still suffering under this preaching every week.
