Bruce Gerencser, 66, lives in rural Northwest Ohio with his wife of 45 years. He and his wife have six grown children and thirteen grandchildren. Bruce pastored Evangelical churches for twenty-five years in Ohio, Texas, and Michigan. Bruce left the ministry in 2005, and in 2008 he left Christianity. Bruce is now a humanist and an atheist.

I didn’t find the article you wrote about here, but I was reminded of an older lady in our church when I was about 12 who stood up at a women’s meeting and with eyes wide and a throb in her voice, told us all about Jesus and how he ‘delights in me’. There were many nods and amens. And at least one preteen who, even then, went, “WTF?”

Funny how so much of the religious imagery calls forth comparisons to romance and sexual actions. And the deeply (indoctrinated?) faithful seem oblivious. Or, if you bring it to their attention, they get annoyed at how disrespectful we are. But it’s creepy how many of them speak of Jesus at times in this way.
I saw the bit about going deeper and I thought, whaat? Then the part regarding erotic vacations had me really intrigued, until I re-read it and saw it said exotic. Oh well…..
Growing up Catholic, I remember getting the idea that God’s love for me was deeper than any human love, and should fulfill me in a way that the love of humans couldn’t. And of course, if I wasn’t feeling it, the problem was with me, I wasn’t listening.
When I was somewhere between sixth and eighth grades (Catholic school), I had to go to the principal’s office and wait for my mother to pick me up because I was sick. I remember a book on a table in the waiting room, a slim volume titled “Are You Running With Me, Jesus?” that was written by a priest who struggled with feeling the presence of God. (He ran for exercise, hence the book title.) I got some interesting ideas from that book which aren’t germane to this discussion, but the very fact that a PRIEST was struggling with something I was feeling, was a great comfort, and definitely delayed my progress toward unbelief.

as a teen, my friends and i used to sit in the back and talk and laugh while the pentecostal adults went nuts at altar time. we’d pick out songs/lines in the hymn books and laugh and make dirty jokes with the titles. hadn’t thought of that in years! thanks for the laugh, bruce. it is funny how so much of evangelical music is sexualized. especially now. just look at the craziness at hillsong and other weird places.
Mary reminded me that if one adds ‘Between the sheets’ to the title of each song in the hymnal, much hilarity can be had.
