We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.

Fun fact: I just returned from a business trip to China and Vietnam. I hadn’t been to China since 2004. I can tell you, in 20+ years China has changed drastically. It used to be a country of very poor people. Now it is a technologically advanced (more than the US) country with good infrastructure, educated populace, and a strong middle class. I visited cities big and small – not just Shanghai or other very large cities. There probably are still peasants in the western and rural regions, but what I saw was a strong middle class of educated people driving new cars, wearing fashionable clothes, and working in good jobs. Honestly, Hong Kong looks disheveled compared to Shanghai, Shenzen, Qingdao.

Vietnam, on the other hand, was like China was 20 years ago. Lots of working poor, run down buildings, etc.

Vance is ignorant. He should go to China where he could see that they aren’t a bunch of peasants.

@ObstacleChick I haven’t been to China, I use to watch videos from two expats that lived there for 10 years (laowhy86 and SerpentZA), both have Chinese wives, speak the language and have explored the country extensively on motorcycles. They ultimately had to leave because of Xi’s oppression against them. They make it quite clear that China hides its poor and the countryside is still full of poor people. China considers itself to be the celestial empire and they aren’t keen on being anything but the top on the world stage, so you can understand why a façade of opulence is presented.
That said Vance is predictably wrong. Chinese as individuals don’t generally invest in U.S. investment products, including treasury bonds.

I totally agree, Troy. I’ve been to China twice, 2006 and 2007, not to the main tourist cites, but to other far flung ones. I give a thousand thumbs up to your recommendation of SerpentZA and Laowhy86’s Youtube channel. They post weekly updates. I’m a bit of an amateur China watcher still as I have ltwo lovely god-daughters adopted from China as babies in the 2000s. That channel is one of the very few channels I trust, there are hundreds of others – and they are CCP propaganda ones, some thinly veiled as such, and others cleverly disguised.

@Matilda Thanks for the response. Very good point about other channels supporting the CCP. It also feeds into my assertion that China cultivates how it is perceived by outsiders (as well as insiders)

I’m surprised that Vance didn’t use that old fashioned insult,” coolie.”

I haven’t heard the term ‘coolie’ in years and had nearly forgotten it existed!

I recall when folk used to put a finger in the corner of their eyes, pull sideways and mimic being ‘slit-eyed.’ As a teacher of 5-6yos learning their alphabet, ‘C’ for cat or ‘D’ for dog was fine but I refused to use ‘L’ for Lucy Lamp, with a picture of a chinese girl in coolie hat, exaggerated narrow eyes and a chinese lantern in her hand!

The government of the CCP deserves a lot of the criticism it receives. I once read a book about communist China written about 25 years ago- the author objectively concluded that their system of government was “Facist”..long before that term was resurrected to describe Trump and his movement.
That said, calling the ordinary citizens of the PRC “peasants” is not only objectively false but also highly insulting to their dignity and culture.
Criticize what deserves to be criticized. Leave the ordinary people just trying to live their lives alone.
