Trump Dump: Representative Chip Roy Says Americans will Cheer When Food Stamps are Cut

This series, titled Trump Dump, features outlandish, untrue quotes from Donald Trump, MAGA supporters, and Right Wing media. If you come across a quote for this series, please send it to me with a link to the news story that contains the relevant quote.

If we were to go through and just put in restraints on the use of food stamps to feed our people sugar, for example…we can save hundreds of billions of dollars.

We can do a lot of savings right out of the gate to reverse the Biden damage, get the economy going, reduce regulations – but not touch benefits that our seniors rely on – yes, we need to address Medicare and Social Security in the long haul, no question, but right now we should reverse Biden damage, get spending restraint on Medicaid, reforms that need to be put in place [and] tax policy that matches all of that.

That would only be a 13 percent cut, you and I can find 13 percent of waste, and I think the DOGE guys too and that would be fiscally responsible and the American people would cheer President Trump and Republicans if we do that.

U.S. Representative Chip Roy (R), as reported by Raw Story

There’s so little compassion and understanding with some of these MAGAts. They seem to think that people who can’t make ends meet just don’t try hard enough. That’s simply not true. Where I live, for example, a studio apartment (if you are lucky enough to find one) is $1500 a month. Most places won’t rent to you if you don’t make 3 times the rent. So to afford this $1500 a month studio, you need to make $4500 a month, or $54,000 a year. How many people do you know that come out of high school or college that can land a $54k job as their 1st job? Neither of my 2 kids did, and one attended an elite university. Most of my friends’ kids are still living at home or the parents are subsidizing the rent costs. Now let’s look at adults – there are a good number not making that amount either. (And yes, I know I live in an expensive area – northeast NJ near NYC).

My father-in-law is 78 and still has to work because social security and his veterans benefits aren’t enough to live on.

My friend’s birth mother gets about $950 a month social security. The mom’s boyfriend who shares the apartment with her was just put into a veterans home because he can’t walk anymore and she can’t take care of him. Without his SS and veterans benefits, she can no longer afford the $1000 a month rent so my friend is trying to get family members to chip in to help her make up the difference in rent and buy food for this poor elderly woman.

Nearly 20 years ago, it wasn’t until my stepdad died and my mom got his life insurance that she could afford to live and pay off their massive debts.

Many people are not ok, people you may know. So don’t be a d#$& about people needing – yes, needing – assistance.

It’s a bit troubling when I feel even a shred of agreement with the likes of Trimp and his MAGA cult And yet it happens. I’ve heard a few people with my sentiments and political leanings comment negatively about being in the checkout line watching someone buy prodigious amounts of unwholesome grocery items with government subsidies. Anyone like myself who ever involuntarily missed a few meals knows hunger hurts. Even so, I personally cringe at the sight of soda pop and various junk food items purchased with free government money. To be fair, the reciipients don’t set the rules for what they can buy with their benefits. Junk food lobbyists and politicians are to blame for ketchup being classified a vegetable.
