Bruce’s Ten Hot Takes for August 22, 2023

hot takes

Breaking balls should be banned from youth baseball.

After another week of bad calls from umpires such as Angel Hernandez, it is time for Major League Baseball to start using ABS (automatic balls and strikes). I’ve seen the technology in use in the minor leagues. I’m sold.

Last night’s Baltimore Ravens vs Washington Commanders NFL game was the best preseason game I’ve ever seen.

Just because Subway is slicing its own meats doesn’t mean their pricy sandwiches are any better.

It seems Liam Neeson’s latest movie is just a rehash of a Taken movie. In fact, I can’t remember a Neeson movie that wasn’t.

Favorite movies of mine: Mars Attacks, Hell in the Pacific, Beyond Rangoon, and Mosquito Coast.

All time favorite TV crime procedural: Homicide: Life on the Street.

Using Ozempic for weight loss can and does cause an incurable stomach disease: gastroparesis. Sufferers can now lose weight without drugs. Nausea, vomiting, and a loss of appetite will do that to you.

It remains to be seen if the United States will survive the prosecution of Donald Trump.

There is a God: Kid Rock was recorded drinking Bud Light.

Bonus: Headline screams: new tool takes the hassle out of peeling boiled eggs. Oh my, how did we ever survive.

Thank you for giving me a reason to avoid using Ozempic. There was another one popular 20 some years ago I took, Meridia I think. And I didn’t last long on it, as it made me feel aggravated and upset. My older brother, a person known for being even-tempered, called me and yelled at me about a problem with our mom! Turns out he took Meridia for a little while too.

We’ll survive the prosecution of Donald Trump. His crime spree needs to end. The biggest reason I wanted him to lose in 2020 was because I was most curious to see how he’d take a loss. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised it has a body count. I’m sad that my wish led to capitol police dying and getting injured as well as the embarrassment of Trump thralls defiling the capitol.

I’m not keen on Subway slicing their own meats. That means the minimum wage slaves that work there have to slice the meat, clean and maintain the slicer. It increases the possibility of injury. Oh and if the slicer is “down” then sorry! outta meat! (It occurs to me is that it is a way to get more out of the staff, they have an extra job to keep them busy, Subway (most likely) pays less for unsliced meat.

So many inventions to deal with the cracking, cooking, and peeling of chicken menstruations. If you ever run out of eggs, blood is actually a very similar chemically and can be substituted in your recipe.

Bruce you forgot Young Sheldon, a well made show. Funny, smart, emotional, and critical of organized religion. It bats a thousand for a TV show.
Re: losing weight, appetite loss is indeed effective, the downside being muscle loss if it goes too far. During my months of existential pain, I lost 40 pounds in 4 months and got weak as a kitten. I regained the weight but not my strength. It’s called sarcopenia. People our age should be warned about it. Eat to feed your body or your body will eat your fat and then your muscles. You may regain the fat but not the muscle.

I would love if MLB would use ABS, but it’s doubtful if that will happen. VAR in soccer is great! The more we can rely on quantifiable officiating, the better, in my opinion.

I agree with you and Bruce. Bad calls make for a bad experience. Bad calls typically get a lot more press than an uncontroversial game. If there is a way for a referee to be an actual computer, why not? There are certain aspects of life where the human element makes for the wondrous diversity in the chorus of our culture. Deciding if a ball is in a strike zone is not such a thing.

Does anyone know whether the Subway retooling included reducing or eliminating the added sugar content of their breads? I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet and lower legs. Before the Subway retooling, a 6-inch sub would make my feet and lower legs sing with withering pain. After swearing off Subway for several years, I bought a sandwich there a couple of weeks ago, and it had no effect on my peripheral neuropathy. A few subsequent subs had no effect either.
