Robert Lyte: Worldly TV, Music, Sin and the Pursuit of Pleasure

robert lyte 2015
Robert Lyte, near the Jordan River, the place where Jesus was baptized. 2015

As I was searching the internet for quotes on the evil of watching television, I stumbled upon the writings and videos of a man by the name of Robert Lyte. Lyte, a self-published author, had a come-to-Jesus moment in 2008. Lyte describes his conversion this way:

…in 2004, I started going to church. Here I noticed a few others who were serious about Jesus and this spoke to me. One day I was touched by the Lord, and broke down in tears knowing the Lord was the forgiver of sins, and that I had to repent and be forgiven. I felt the peace of the Lord that day, and later I was also baptised in water. A peace and joy came on me when I was baptised, which was the Holy Spirit, but I did not continue to walk the way of truth as a disciple of Jesus.

You see, I had heard of believing and baptism, but I had not heard the way of actually seeking Jesus, and living for him fully apart from my way of life. So I was still in sin, and sins got me down into many grief and troubles. I had a lot of trouble with depression daily, and needed help from God.

Then in 2008 Jesus woke me up. I had been in difficulty and I had nowhere to go, so I cried out to the Lord Jesus to please help. I cried out to the Lord, “Help me,” and the Lord gave me peace. But I continued living my own way and then a few months after I had cried out for help, the Lord brought me across the testimony of another brother in Christ who used to be in the occult and who had seen the reality of the demon world. He was also shown how true Christians are, how they are a light in this world, and how they have the joy of Christ around them, and how they walk in the light. I knew that I wasn’t walking in the light. I knew that I was not one of these true followers of Jesus.

At the same time, I also came across the testimony and warning of another brother who had come out of the world, and had turned to Jesus fully. This brother warned that the Lord had told him to prepare for the bridegroom’s return, for his waiting people. This brother was shown by the Lord that time was short and judgement was coming and Jesus Christ was coming back soon. He was shown the reality of hell, when he died of a heart attack, and Jesus saved him to come back from death and live for the Lord and warn others.

….

I knew I was on my way to hell. I realised that I needed to be saved because I wasn’t right with the Lord and not ready for him, and I realised that this was going to be the only chance I was going to get. It was either now, or never. I knew that I had to seek the Lord Jesus and I knew that I had to find him. I knew I had to seek until I found. I knew I had to make the most of this second chance. So I got on my knees and I started to seek the Lord. I decided to repent, because I knew that I was on my way to hell, and I knew that this would be the only chance I would get. I knew that time was short. So I got on my knees and I started to pray to the Lord. I repented of my sin. Then a light came into my life and that very night when I was praying, the Lord started to speak to me and he started to show me things and he started to open my heart to his reality.

….

So even though I knew I should be doing right and I knew what was right, I wasn’t free to carry out my good intentions because I was bound to sin within me that lived within me. And so Jesus set me free from that. It was a miracle. It was the power of my testimony that Jesus gave me a second chance and he set me free from sin. So I am using my second chance to enter the kingdom and walk the narrow way to the kingdom of God following Jesus.

Thanks to Jesus giving him a second chance, Lyte now devotes his life to preaching the true gospel, calling on all who will listen to repent and stop living in sin. Evidently, next to Jesus and Elvis, Lyte is the purest man who has ever lived. What follows is a 2007 video by Lyte titled Worldly TV, Music, Sin Pleasure Pursuit. I will warn you, it is hard to watch. Lyte comes off as a man who has taken way too much Zoloft, but I do hope readers will watch a few minutes of it so they can grasp Lyte’s obsession with sin and “worldly” living. After I watched it, I thought, man, even in my most fundamentalist of days, I didn’t take things this far. Perhaps Lyte is a truer Christian now than I was then. Whatever he might be, he is certainly a perfect example of what happens when a person takes the Bible and its moralism to its logical conclusion.

Sadly, there are more than a few Christians who think just like Robert Lyte. What follows are a few of the comments on the aforementioned video:

  • AMEN. I don’t understand why so many “Christians” don’t see this. I am recently saved and I feel the DESIRE and need to flee from secular TV and Music and everything that does not glorify God. My wife has been told that “a lot of new Christians are like this but it will CALM DOWN soon, they all do”… THAT MEANS THAT MOST GET SUCKED UNDER by the pressure of society and the social norm!. Not I, JESUS KEEP ME STRONG!! Praise our LORD, KING, and SAVIOR!!
  • Thanks for informing us, i have being trying by all miss to stop watching things you mention, b/c i see evil in it. Inside i see all as inventor of sin as by apostle Paul. Pls i will like to learn from you God bless you .
  • I love your vids keep up the good work we as believers need these kinds of messages to keep us in check! Its so easy to stray and accept the things of the world. The church is now so full of so much false hood it baffles the mind!. In these deadly times we cant afford to slacken we must make more effort then ever to make sure we are READY. I am even deleting those who are not serious out of my phone book!
  • Jesus Bless you Rob!amen! 2nd thessalonians states that “they all will be damned who believed not the Truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” Jesus also said do not be in (that) darkness that that day will overtake you. (we won’t even see the soon arrival of sudden destruction before it’s too late if we don’t forsake and separate from the lusts of this world before it’s too late. only in whole hearted REPENTANCE can we obtain Full Salvation in Christ Jesus the Controller.
  • Powerful message, brother Robert! May the Most High continue to bless you with the Holy Spirit!
  • Amen brother keep warning and speaking the truth we love you and pray for you and your wife Jesus bless you.“I hate this world,
  • i have separated myself already. I follow Jesus daily. Thank you for this message. Hope more souls come out , separate and repent.

Lyte conducts a live video meeting of like-minded sin-hating Christ followers every Friday at 8:00 pm. I suspect that he is unable to find a church pure enough for him, so he has taken to the internet in hopes of finding people who view God, the Bible, holiness, and the world as he does. Lyte even has virtual communion during his live video meetings. If you would like to check out a previous live meeting, please go here.

Not long ago, I wrote a post titled, Do Evangelical Beliefs Lead to Mental Illness? In the post I dealt with how certain Evangelical beliefs can lead to mental instability. Robert Lyte is a perfect example of this. While his beliefs are certainly Evangelical, he has seized upon the teachings of the Holiness movement and men such as Charles Finney, a nineteenth century revivalist, and taken them to their logical conclusion.

Let’s not forget that the Bible DOES say: be ye (the Christian) perfect even as your father in heaven is perfect. It also says, he that sins is of the devil. While most Evangelicals go to great lengths to explain away these verses, should Robert Lyte be faulted for literally believing the words found in the inspired, inerrant, infallible Word of God? Perhaps Lyte is part of that remnant of believers who will be alive when Jesus comes back to earth. Perhaps he is the true Christian, and everyone else is headed for hell.

It’s hard to argue that the Evangelical church hasn’t gotten “worldlier” over the past half-century. While Evangelicals still show a voyeur’s interest in the sexual proclivities of others, they have largely abandoned the social fundamentalism of yesteryear. Evangelicals have little problem with drinking alcohol, smoking, getting tattoos, going to the movies, and the like–all things that were roundly condemned a few generations ago. Now, it seems that as long as Evangelicals don’t have sex before marriage, never have an abortion, and vote for God’s chosen candidate, they are free to pretty much wallow in the slime of the “world.” And even here, we now know that Evangelicals engage in premarital sex and get abortions just as their counterparts in the world. Perhaps, the only true sign one is an Evangelical is that he or she votes Republican every four years.

I have long believed that the internet, with its ready access to anything and everything, will prove to be the undoing of Evangelicalism. While hardcore Fundamentalists will draw away and join up with fellow world-haters like Robert Lyte, the rest will increasingly become a part of the world that their Bible tells them is evil. There is nothing like “worldliness” to cure the disease of Christian Fundamentalism.

Note

Robert Lyte has a Facebook page. As of this writing, 3,803 lovers of God have LIKED his page. His latest entry takes Christian pop star Justin Bieber to task:

Dear friends, real followers of Jesus, are disciples of Jesus. They are not the Christians of this generation who name Jesus by name, yet walk in the paths of this world. Justin Beiber is a good example of naming and shaming: such claims Christ, and has believing parent, yet, they walk and follow the paths of destruction, that lead to the gates of the eternal fire. Do not be deceived, if you walk an ungodly life claiming Christ in work only, you will SINK into destruction….Either we live as disciples of Jesus and are saved, or we walk the ways of this world (the lusts of the eyes, the pride of life, and pride of the eyes) all of which the entertainment industry represents, and PERISH…..

If you are a Twitterer, you can follow Lyte’s Twitter feed here.

Here’s a comment by a follower of Lyte which I found on the blog of Scott Postma:

Do people still go to churches to seek the true Jesus? I know I left them many many years ago. I have a daily minute by minute connection to Yahshua / Jesus my savior who gives me all I need. I recently had a dream where I was making a movie about all the churches that were closing. I then awoke and The Holy Spirit told me that people who have the Holy Spirit will meet with a few others of which some don’t and that will be the new way. It’s been my way for almost 30 years even though it took me until 2013 to actually get a visitation from ministering angels who cheered and celebrated Me… back into the fold.. They kept me up from 8pm til 2am last may 1st. Since that time satan has not had the hold on me like he previously had and my faith has increased immeasurably. Yes I do go to a online kinda church with one Robert lyte who holds teachings on youtube and facebook. There are a few who go but then again these are the end times and the churches / buildings have gone the way of the dinosaur.. Well the true churches.. the true church today is a body of believers who hold fast to the truth and stay filled with their oil so the thief who comes in the night is surprised we are ready. … Yes there are a few good small churches still teaching the truth. I went to one last year in ickesburg pa. may God bless you all and may you come to the knowledge of the truth.

Postma, I believe, attends the infamous Doug Wilson’s church.

Holy Smoke! How many cases like this would you need to convince the average church-goer that they are on the wrong track….? An infinite number…. infinite because it is not about plain and simple truth at all…. it is about belief. People are more than willing to be led along in such a way that they remain out of the line of fire. It begins with early damage in life, I’d guess and repression that arranges for ways avoid the pain of personal human history. God offers a fast elevator ride out of the line of fire. Robert Lyte is a prime example of this phenomenon. I would be interested in learning the details of his childhood. He is scary!

So, I still cannot find anything wrong with what Lyte has said. Moreover, I do not find any salient point, nor any point at all, by the Atheist author of this page.

I can remember this being something that was drilled into us again and again. After all, if we come away from and be not of this world, God will be our Father. BUT, this is not feasible in today’s world (because it is center-intuitive and makes no sense), so people fail at this. What better way to keep your flock glued to your words and keep coming to you for guidance? Setting them up to fail makes dependency.
I used to forgo the TV and radio and music etc etc. What a crock! Cult leaders gather together vulnerable people and feed their mental illness.

Paul, in this portion of the Bible, proves to be the perfect cult leader:
    2 Corinthians 6: 1-18

We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged. Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels. Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

    “““““`

    Then there is this:

    Do Not Be Unequally Yoked
    (Exodus 29:45-46)

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

    ““““
YES, mental illness makes some sense when you are immersed with others who are like-minded. Come away from that and you can see the horrors of such a mindset.

    A couple of random thoughts:

    1) What is up with that voice? So strange! Does he have an accent? I could only make it through the first minute.

    2) If these people are supposed to be shunning the “secular ways of the world,” then why are they watching videos on YouTube, reading blogs, chatting on social media and surfing the Internet? Are these considered to be “religious” if you sekect the “right” sites and avoid the “temptations of others?

      A couple of random replies:

1). Yes that is an accent. Australian, but with a little something extra added in, perhaps a slight speech impediment. As an Australian myself, I picked the Aussie part straight away, but the delivery is not typical of how most of us speak. I only kept listening past the first 20 seconds to make sure I was right about that accent.

2). I went looking for him on the Google and found that he is a former elite athlete (cycling) and currently runs a personal training business. Much of that business seems to be run on line, including fitness videos you can sign up for. He seems to have no troubles using the secular world to generate his income.

From the little I looked at of both sides of his life, he seems to have a sharp divide between the two, at least on line.

Bruce I came across your blog looking at information about Robert. I am confused how you go from being a Pastor for 25 years and wind up walking away from your faith a few years later. How does that happen? What major things happened that made you decide that God does not exist after you spent 25 years saying He does exist?

I don’t join with Robert but have come across a few of his videos and well I personally don’t subscribe to some of his extreme ideas like not watching television and things like that, but I have subscribed to extremes like not reading novels even though I am in the midst of writing a novel. I choose this course because I get to involved with entertaining novels that it consumes my time and I wind up neglecting my time with God and the Holy Bible.

BUT that’s my choice and maybe that is Robert’s choice. Just maybe he realizes that television is a distraction for him and so he learned to disconnect from something that makes him stumble.

Why is that a problem? Would you rather him not care about his sinful passions and turn into a anit-christ who lives for self and does not care about others?

I mean seriously what happened to your faith?

I can say honestly that for 20 years I related to my Christian faith for which I had little to cling onto. Sure I knew some facts and had a few experiences but I only could relate to what I heard or read. After all these years I finally encountered God in a real way. There were some really tough times, but denying God now that I have had these experiences would be clear insanity!

Example is that I use to pray to God in the past and maybe hear back sometimes. It would take months to hear back.

I apparently was not seeking the Kingdom of God and all His righteousness because now I hear back from God all the time.

I hope the best for you and your family

What you and Robert fear is what others call living life to its fullest. Sin is a religious construct meant control people and provide a “need” for forgiveness. It’s a great racket. Where, oh where would preachers and churches be if it wasn’t for sin? The sad thing is that people like Robert will forgo living life hoping that there is some sort of divine payoff in the end. There is no God, no heaven, no hell, so you might as well enjoy life. Do good, live large, love, and then die.

Subjective experiences are not proof for the existence of a non-descript God, let alone the Christian God. How do you KNOW it is the Christian God who is talking to you? How do you KNOW it is the Christian God who is moving and working in your life? There’s no evidence you can give for this claim except you believe it to be so. Sorry, but I am not going to take your word for it.

      ….

You sent me an email too. My answer is below. I deleted the personal information.

I am a little disappointed that you have such strong limitations on what can be posted on your website regarding Christian faith, but seem not to gave a problem with attacking other people who are Christians. But its your website so I guess you have the right!

Yes, my website, my rules. So, let me see, do you want the “right” to personally attack me?

Perhaps you need to learn the difference between attacking beliefs and attacking individuals. I try my best not to attack people. I do however, with gusto, attack their beliefs. Robert Lyte’s beliefs are mentally, emotionally, and perhaps physically harmful. I make no apology for attacking his beliefs. It will be a good day when beliefs like his (and yours) are relegated to the dustbin of human history. Christianity has had 2,000 to make its case. It has miserably failed. The future belongs to science and humanism.

I will tell you what I tell every other Christian who whines or complains about me not letting them say whatever they want on my blog. You have ONE opportunity to make your best argument for why I should believe in the Christian God. Over the past eight years, numerous Christians have given me their best arguments. They have all miserably failed. Why? Because I have already heard every argument one could make for the existence of the Christian God and the truthfulness of Christian belief. As Solomon said, there is nothing new under the sun, and so it is with the arguments Christians use to prove that Christianity is the one true faith. So, you are welcome to try, Kevin, but don’t be surprised when I say I’ve heard it before.

You read books that challenged your faith. I was challenged too in the past but now God has solidified my faith and I see Him ever so clearly more than before. I am a Hebrew believer and study from Greek and Hebrew. But it is the real and genuine experiences directly from the hands of God that have revived my struggling faith.

As I stated above, subjective experiences provide no evidence for the existence of the Christian God. Belief requires faith, a faith I do not have.

Did you SEE the hands of God? I mean physically, not in some sort of metaphorical sense? Of course not. If you want people like me to believe, then you are going to have to give sound, rational reasons for why we should embrace your beliefs. How do you KNOW that your experiences are not just the machinations of your mind? If you tell me you have experienced miracles, how do you know it is the Christian God who worked those miracles? Perhaps a different God worked them. You saying it so is not enough to convince me, Kevin. I believe what I can see or rationally understand.

Just because someone challenged your faith go to God and ask Him to make Himself real and then see if you still feel the same

I just asked God to make himself real. Nope, I still feel the same. I do hope you realize how silly this statement is. If there is a God, he knows where I am. I am content to live my life free of the mind-numbing, life-killing constraints of religion.

      Thanks for commenting

Kevin, if you are seeing things too as well as having God get back to you all the time, I suggest a visit to the local doc. It is not nice to have a breakdown. My uncle starting hearing God answer all the time too and then he felt he had to go street-preaching to save the lost. Trouble was, he was lost in delusion and ended up on life-long meds to control his delusions. Look after yourself, Kevin. The voice you hear answering comes from inside your head and is fed by lunatics like Robert Lyte. When your voices overcome you, Robert will tell you it is because you were doing it all wrong!

    Hi Kevin,

” … now I hear back from God all the time”.

Really Kevin! How do you hear back from God? Was it an audible voice, a dream, the bible, meditation or what? How do you know it was God and not just something going on in your head or heart? How would you distinguish between your own ideas and God’s?

Have you checked your so-called answers from “god” against reason and science? Have you visited a psychiatrist lately to see what he/she might think about your hearing from God and what it is you think you are hearing?

When I was a Bapticostal, I used to hear charismatics claiming that they were hearing from God, but what they were claiming often conflicted with what other Bapticostals were saying. They couldn’t all be hearing from God and probably none were hearing from God. Seriously Kevin, you need to get a grip on reality.

    Shalom,

Why I love Jesus and know that He is God.

Because He loved me so much that He left His glory above, came to this earth and became a human, not only to pay the ultimate required price to redeem me back to Himself by becoming the only pure and holy sacrifice pleasing and acceptable to God, but in doing so, to deliver me from my own sinful nature.

This is why so many Christians struggle with sin, they don’t understand that Christ not only forgives our sins when we become born-again disciples and followers of Jesus, but we die to our old sinful nature and He comes to dwell within us by His Holy Spirit. We become spiritually minded and are no longer carnally minded.

This is the amazing mystery Paul explains that was hidden for past generations. Great is the mystery of Godliness, Christ in me, the hope of glory!! He is my righteousness, He is my victory, He is my sanctification. We are all hopeless failures and can do nothing of ourselves to please God, but only Jesus can please the Father and as He lives His life in me and through me, He gives me His resurrection life of overcoming, of joy, of happiness, of peace and of victory. This is the hope of glory. The hope of being victorious, the hope of living that overcoming life of righteousness that has been made possible for us to live!

Read Romans chapters 7 and 8. Wretched man that I am, who can set me free from my fallibility? And the joy in chapter 8 which says There is now therefore no condemnation to them in Christ Jesus, who walk everyday in the Spirit of the Lord. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, has set me free from the law of sin and death. For as many as are led by the Spirit of the Lord, they shall be called the sons of God.

Christ liveth in me, oh what a salvation this, that Christ liveth in me. It is not just believing, but it is in experiencing the living Christ in me, moment by moment, giving me His peace and rest, a peace which far exceeds anything this world may try and offer me.

Paul did tell us that there will be those who will not love the Truth and because they don’t love it, God will allow them to believe the lie! Yes God will actually allow them to be deceived, because they do not love His Word which is the only Truth. One has to believe something. Either you believe in God or you don’t believe in God. So you believe you’re an atheist. How sad. When, as Paul tells us in Romans chapter 1, we need only look around us at all the beauty and glory of creation, it is enough evidence to prove that there is a loving God who created everything. Just chop off your big toe or your thumb, and see how you battle. Just remove your eye, ear or tongue, or one of your organs. Man you’re going to have problems. People that don’t believe that God created this universe are so blind. As Paul says in Romans 1, professing to be wise, they have become fools. Men of reprobate minds.

Yes God is a gentleman, He does not force Himself on anyone. He has given each man the freedom of choice. But on that great and fearful day that each man will stand before His maker, there will no time to argue your case, for God knows everything. He knows about each and every time He gave you the opportunity to accept His free gift of salvation and how many times you refused and turned away. Then He will turn those away too who were not interested in trusting His beloved Son for their salvation. Eternal separation from this great and mighty and loving God.

Whether men choose to believe it or not, Jesus said: I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man cometh to the Father, but by Me!

There is no other Name given by which men may be saved.

His Name shall be called Immanuel, for He shall save His people from their sins.

Its all written in the Word, and that Word is everlasting. Let God be true and let every man be a liar.

He saves, He keeps, He satisfies, this wonderful Friend of mine. He has changed my life completely. I have followed Jesus as my Saviour and Lord for 43 years and He grows sweeter each day. He is preparing for Himself a pure and holy Bride out of this old world and blessed are those whose garments will be found pure when He comes.

Take the world and give me Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.
The cross before me, the world behind me, no turning back.

How sad that people who once served this wonderful, loving Saviour, could turn their backs and walk away and run down others who are going all out for Jesus.

Jesus has never failed me, not once in my life has He ever failed me. He answers all my prayers, He keeps me day by day, He blesses me with good health and supplies all my needs. He protects me when I face danger, He directs my footsteps according to His Word and gives me the strength to follow Him all the way.

Jesus is the answer for the world today
    Above Him there’s no other
    Jesus is the Way!

I’ll be praying for you. May the eyes of your understanding be opened to the True Jesus whom you have yet to discover.

I sitteth on my ass this morning and liveth through the Babble-quoting and loveth the new day in spite of the lunacy. I got a letter from my brother last night that might have been written by Grace C. It used exactly the same woo, same phrasing, and still, I liveth, still I standeth and marveleth at the wandering embrace of the truly loved Christian in lah-lah land. They just loveth to informeth the lost. I just hope my brother, as he continues to quote the Babble, remembers to eat well and go to the bathroom on his own.

    Dear Brother Bruce,

I had no idea Elvis became a follower/disciple of The Messiah. The Messiah said, “sell everything you have and give to the poor….come follow me?” Did Elvis sell graceland and everything he owned and gave the proceeds away?”…did Elvis “deny himself and carried his cross” to come after The Messiah? I will be researching this online as soon as I send this email to you. Just to let you know. There are very few TRUE followers and The Messiah. I too am stuck with those two instructions of His. I am praying for faith and trust so that I can have the courage to obey. I hope I do not run out of time. Please pray for me as well.

Thank you and May The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit bless you and your family always!

Dino, my uncle talked exactly as you do before he took to the streets preaching to the lost. He was unable to sleep well anymore or eat and ended up on Lithium for the rest of his life. Take care of yourself, sir. If you have a family, it is your wholly responsibility to care for them, love them and stand by them. Stop getting your underdrawers all twisted…. just breathe in and then out….

I can’t stand those prosy speech patterns from the UK and their Commonwealth colonies. So irritating ! I couldn’t sit through Lytes’s video if I tried. His voice also has an overweening quality to it.

I’ve spoken to Robert a few times and asked him a series of questions about the Trinity, predestination, and damnation that he ultimately couldn’t answer.

I asked him if more than 90% of all humans are going to hell, can we truly say life is precious and had meaning when most of them were better of never having been born?
