Does God Hate People?

tim-conway-god-hates-you

Does God hate people? Liberal and progressive Christians say, ABSOLUTELY NOT! GOD LOVES EVERYONE! Much like their Evangelical brethren, they appeal to the Bible (and personal feelings) to prove their beliefs. In their minds, the essence of God is his love for his creation. Personally, I like this flavor of Christianity. Loving self and others is a good thing. The problem with it and all other peculiar interpretations of the Bible that it is come to by ignoring what other verses say. The Bible is a hopelessly contradictory book, and it can be used to prove almost anything. Take Tim Conway, pastor of Grace Community Church in San Antonio, Texas. I was Tim’s pastor for a time in the 1990s. He is a diehard, fire-breathing Fundamentalist Calvinist. Tim reads the same the Bible as liberals and progressives do and concludes that God not only hates sin, he hates those who do it. I will let Tim share with you his view on the matter. The video is short, so I hope you will take the time to watch it.

If you read the comments on this video, you will see that Christians are quite divided over Tim’s hate message. And that is the point of this post. The Bible is inexhaustible to the degree that it can be used as proof for countless competing beliefs. This alone is proof enough for the bankruptcy of Christianity. If Christians can’t even agree on the basics: salvation, baptism, communion, and can’t agree on whether God hates or loves sinners, why should unbelievers bother to give Christianity a moment’s notice? The Bible says that there is ONE Lord, ONE Faith, and ONE Baptism, yet thousands of Christian sects, each differing with the other, suggest otherwise.

“This is the God we have.” Yes, a God that supposedly made us, who knows the future, who knew the 1st humans would disobey, who knew that he would declare all sinners (all humans born thereafter) abominable and sentence them to eternity in hell. Yes, this is the kind of God they have, the fundamentalist evangelicals. Isn’t their God awesome?

My fundy world didn’t talk too much about god hating the person, other than ‘hating the sin, loving the sinner’….it was more that our sins hurt god and made him sad, or worse, when we sinned, we crucified jesus all over again. So jesus and god must be in permanent agony…with all the sin there is in the world to cause them such pain…and an almighty god created the world that way that keeps him in permanent agony??? Hard to believe…!

hmmm. certainly only a loving god could drown everry single human man woman and child except for noah and his family because they displesed him. and only a loving father could punsh a child with eternal burning in hell because he was disobedient. and only a loving caring god would instruct his male children to never allow their women folk, wives or daughters or sisters or mothers to have any voice in church or in prayer at home, because only those children endowed with testicles are whollly loved. and a specially kind god would instruct his children to hate and despise anyone who looked different, had darker skin, or spoke a different language, or wasn ‘t born american so, yeah. god loves us. just not unconditionally, he’s got a boat load of qualification

This is why we are doomed. Crazy Christian hatred and loathing for others unlike them and it’s spread into our right wing politics who are in control of this country now. Religion is poison..just look at history..world history and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

My deconversion process led me to the conclusion that there is no god and I am grateful for that. Otherwise if I still believed there was a god I would look at the reality of so much suffering and pain under the watchful eye of an omnipotent being who could not bother to make things better and I would be the one doing the hating

I got curious and went to their web site, then looked up their address on Google. Let’s just say their church does not look inviting–they do not seem to be blessed financially.

Well, I guess that is what the bible says. At least he’s being more honest than liberal mainliners and universalists who kind of make it up as they go.
