   Bill Maher said he would vote for Sarah Palin before he would vote for a Democratic Socialist. Who is Bill Maher?

   Answer: A media hack who doesn’t give a shit about anything but his ratings, personal interests, and his astronomical paycheck. He could care less for any Americans outside of the celebrity and wealthy / privileged sphere.

   Democratic Socialists are not communists, and anyone that suggests otherwise is a liar. Are some DSA members communists? Sure, but that’s not the official party position. I, for one, am not a communist.

   Reply: Agree. As far as the term communist, exactly how is that defined anymore? I don’t find too many Americans of any ilk wanting to resurrect the Bolshevik party. I do find that many Democrats, wanting to get off the Corporate “Bought and Paid For DNC”, are running for office to cut and wean Corporate and Oligarch greed off the American taxpayers tit. A redistribution of wealth is long overdue since Ronald Ray-Gun decided the only class of people to support in this country were the wealthy.

   I’ve concluded that tens of millions of Americans love Jesus and hate Muslims. And Blacks. And Mexicans. And immigrants. They hate anyone who doesn’t think and look like them.

   Reply: Sad isn’t it, the Christian Nationalist and MAGA movement has reacquainted this country to the fact that racism, bigotry and greed is alive and well. Thanks to these people the Jim Crow movement has made a rather dramatic resurgence in the good ole USA.

   High school football starts in less than two weeks. I love high school football, so I’m looking forward to attending as many games as possible this year.

   Reply: As do I, besides, us proletarian non famous, non wealthy working stiff “scum” that comprise 95% of the population can’t exactly afford to go to College or Pro games anymore. That has been taken away and is strictly reserved for the $$$ folk.

   Trump said today that the American economy is booming. Really? Where? Not in rural Northwest Ohio.

   Reply: Well IT IS for the 5% of the population that Trump actually supports, not so much for the rest of us.
   Lets see? Didn’t he promise $2.00 Gas and 99 cent eggs prior to the election? OH I am sorry, I forget the now
   Scientifically authenticated truth about Trump, documented with the Scientific Method by repeated consistent results.
   That truth is, when the Epstein buddy, adored by MAGA, opens his mouth, what comes out is: A GOD DAMNED LIE.

   Most Americans say they wouldn’t vote for a Democrat Socialist. This is not surprising since most of these people voted for Trump three times. They wouldn’t know a good candidate if their lives depended on it. Way too many ignorant voters in this country.

   Reply: For a country that claims it is “intelligent” we have proven twice now, in 2016, and 2020, we are the stupidest bunch of voting M-Fers, that ever existed on planet earth.

   Monty Fritts, a MAGA Republican gubernatorial candidate in Tennessee, argued that the First Amendment does not apply to state governments. If elected, he plans to ban mosques and non-Christian religions. Go ahead and tell me again why we shouldn’t consider a candidate’s religion when deciding whether to vote for them?

   Reply: Just more proof of MAGA’s betrayal of the Constitution and what a bunch of liars, bigots and thugs they really are.

   Bonus: God’s Store House Food Bank in Bluefield, West Virginia refused food donations from LGBTQ people. Why? Cuz the Bible says . . .

   It’s one thing to reject something offered to you personally because of the person or group offering it. But it’s simply obscene to reject it when people hungrier and more desperate than you are depend on it.

   Sometimes it kills me to identify as a Democrat. But supporting someone like Sarah Palin, or rejecting someone like Abdul El-Sayed, because the party isn’t exactly to your liking is a bit like choosing a hamburger over a barbecued rib because it has less fat and calories. (Not that I mind a hamburger, but you k ow what I mean.)

   Ah yes. The Cincinnati Bengals. I know the pain, Bruce. They almost always find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

   Being a child of the 70’s and ‘80’s, when I think of “communism”, I think of places like the former Soviet Union and East Germany. These places IMO just had Facism with different flair (East Germany went so far to use similar uniforms to the Wehrmacht). Referring to them as “Socialist” countries would be like calling Mitt Romney a Nazi. While there might be a few similarities between his views on certain things and the Facists/Nazis of Germany, he certainly is not one and does not advocate the means and methods that government used. In fact I would argue to call someone like him a “Nazi” is an insult to the millions of people who died and suffered under the actual Nazi regime. I am not a fan of conflating someone with whom I may disagree with those who were mass murderers.

   I feel the same way about Republican attempts (along with the biggest “communist” of them all, Dear Leader Trump) to conflate DSA members with the murderous Cambodian Khmer Rouge (Pol Pot was the infamous “Brother Number One”), the East German Stasi (secret police) or Mao Tse Tung’s genocidal Cultural Revolution of the late 1960’s. I am not aware of a DSA person who has advocated that type of extreme vision. Maybe I’m wrong?

   I do feel some folks on the far left in general are reluctant to own their own closet of atrocities in history, but then again MAGA people in general don’t want to own the historical atrocities committed by the USA, either. Regardless of the history, that doesn’t invalidate the idea that the working class and lower middle class should have more say and influence in government, or that a progressive income tax system with higher rates for billionaires is the most reasonable. Or that good and very inexpensive universal health insurance should be available to everyone, or that a truly secular system that respects everyone equally is the best government for society.

   Jesus was a brown-skinned Middle Eastern guy who told people to do unto others as you would have done unto yourself. If you hate everyone who doesn’t look like you and think like you, how can you love a teacher who tells you to treat everyone else well?

      White jesus: I still smile to recall my blond, scandinavian tour guide on the Faroe Islands last year. He’d mentioned he was a x-tian. He took us to a beauty spot and said he sometimes came there alone to de-stress or if he had a problem to think over. He added, pointing up at the sky, ‘And of course, I ask my foreign friend up there for advice.’ I’m dying to try that on a white-jesus person if I meet one sometime.

   I’m assuming you watched the Bill Maher segment. He brought the receipts. Go to the DSA Wikipedia page, all their caucuses have some shade of communism: Marxist–Leninist–Maoist, Trotskyist, and there’s an anti-Zionist caucus to round out the loony left.
   That said, I’ll be voting for El-Sayed, and hope he wins. He has similar problems to Graham Platner, unvetted and unprepared for the arena. He’s never been elected, never had rhetorical slings and arrows pointed at him. He’s an academic and an idealist. But hey, it’s a blue year and so I’m not saying he doesn’t have a chance. The first thing the GOP muckrakers are going to pull is how his father-in-law (and his PAC, the biggest donor to his campaign) is an unindicted terrorist. I suppose that’s not a surprise, I suspect most if not all religious Muslims in southeast Michigan give to the “charity” of terrorism. (It reminds me of La Shish, a great Arab restaurant, essentially went out of business. Donating to terrorists.)
   On the subject of electing Muslims. While some of the comments make a reference to brown people. I’ll remind them that Muslims don’t have a specific color. One thing they do have in common is that there is no separation of mosque and state in the Quran–Islam views religion (din) and state/government (dawla) as an integrated whole rather than two separate domains. While Christian nationalism is more of a problem in the U.S., every Muslim politician should be viewed with suspicion based on that fact, not the color of their skin, whatever it may be. In a way any non-Christian politician is typically a plus for separation of church and state, so that typically will give them a pass.

      As with church denominations, I judge groups based on official beliefs, not beliefs of individual members.

      Further, most Americans define the word communism in a Soviet sense. That’s not what’s going on here, though I’m sure there are DSA members who think Soviet communism was a failed revolution. Same goes for Marxism. People scream about Marxism, but when asked to cogently define the term and its variants, they can’t.

      As far as anti-Zionism, we all should be anti-Zionists. Not anti-semites, anti-Zionists — those who appose the genocidal, apartheid state of Israel; a land forcibly, violently appropriated by world powers from Palestinians after World War II.

      I take a big tent approach to the DSA and socialism in general, as do most DSA-friendly politicians. AOC is a DSA member, Bernie is not, though both broadly support Democratic socialism (which is not identical to the DSA).

      Socialist writers and politicians need to do a much better job explaining the vagaries of socialism. I hope to do so myself, but I certainly have no intention of turning this site into a primarily a political/socialist blog.

      I have no interest in arguing with Communists, Marxists, Socialists, and DSA defenders about who holds the keys to the kingdom. “Can’t we all just get along,” said the President in Mars Attacks. The answer, of course, was NO, and the President was vaporized with a ray gun. On purpose or a misunderstanding?

      Let me be clear, I’m not a Communist, even though not everything espoused by communism (which form?) is bad/wrong/evil. I treat Communism the way I do Jesus. Not everything Jesus allegedly said is wrong. Truth is truth wherever it may be found; even from you, Troy.🤣🤣 (which I figure we agree on a lot more things than disagree).

      The DSA is having growing pains, having grown from 20, 000 to 120,000 members almost overnight. When you are a small group, you can get by saying “defund the police.” Today? The DSA needs to repudiate the use of the term and carefully explain what they DO mean about law enforcement reform. Most people would agree we have a big law enforcement problem; how rights are routinely abused and denied for citizens and noncitizens alike. So bury the defund line and start preaching reform. Same goes for past statements on prisons, border security, and immigration.

      We live in an ignorant society. To avoid confusion, the DSA needs to clear what these terms mean. The same goes for the Occupy Movement. Extremist voices from within the tent caused harm to the movement’s long term viability and success because their views were not challenged or condemned.

         I think a lot of socialist ideas have merit, and I also believe that MAGA and Donald Trump have earned the “Facist” description.
         At the same time, I am concerned about any political faction that willingly identifies with the old Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact or their symbology just as much as aim concerned about MAGA’s hyper patriotism which smacks of willful ignorance of actual history. Just a cursory read of Soviet history, particularly under Joseph Stalin, is enough to make me say, “No thanks”.
         When I opined that there can be an “American socialism”, I envision an FDR type of New Deal, a system that would actually prevent a violent Soviet-type Revolution (and subsequent show trials, firing squads and Gulags that would follow).

   I just about fell out of my chair the other day when my husband said he thought Democratic Socialism is probably the best type of government we coukd create. Context – he and I used to be “fiscally conservative and socially progressive” Republicans until Trump ran for president in 2016. We both started examining our political beliefs when we saw how many people were following this con man. My husband stayed further to the right than I did for a few years and stayed in the “Libertarian” camp until the Covid era revealed that “leave me alone” politics wasn’t practical.
