A Challenge to the Thousands of Christians Who Said They Would Pray for Me

In 1 Kings 18, we find the Prophet Elijah doing battle with the prophets of Baal. No need to tell the whole story. It’s enough for me to say Elijah won the battle and slaughtered all of the prophets of Baal. Elijah prayed one prayer, and BOOM! God sent fire from Heaven! Awesome, right? In John 14, Jesus told his followers that they would one day do greater works than he did. Surely this is a promise for believers today, too. Surely through the power of the Holy Spirit they can do great works. If this is so — and the Bible says it is — I want to propose a surefire way for God to heal me and restore me to the health of an active, athletic twenty-five-year-old man. Are you ready, Christians?

I have been blogging since 2007. Over the past twenty years, thousands of Christians have told me “I am praying for you!” Monday, I had melanoma surgically removed from my neck. My nurse was a friendly young woman; a delight to talk to. She was chatty, and so was I. She learned that I had recently been diagnosed with severe axonal neuropathy, leading to severe nerve pain in my legs. She replied, “well I sure will be praying for you.” I smiled, and said, “Thank you. I appreciate it.” No need to offend, but I sure have heard that line a few thousand times, both as a Christian and as an unbeliever.

As I was deeply meditating on prayer, God sent me a message straight from throne room of God. The Holy One said that I would be completely healed, right down to my hemorrhoids, IF the following happened:

On April 1, 2026, at 4:20 PM, God is calling every Christian who promised to pray for me to gather together in the Ney Park for a time of worship and prayer. Perhaps, my former best friend, Pastor Keith Troyer, will come and lead this testimony to God’s love, forgiveness, and healing. Maybe all my former colleagues in the ministry who said they would pray for me will be in attendance too. Throw in Dr. David Tee, John, Revival Fries and other “praying Christians,” why, these mighty prayer warriors will surely deliver me from my afflictions; and if they do, I promise to serve Jesus the remaining days of my life. I will even record a YouTube video testimony of my healing. Total healing, not just my hemorrhoids.

Surely, if a thousand or more praying Evangelicals — the one true religion — show up at the Ney Park on April 1, 2026 at 4:20 PM, God will hear their prayers and heal me, right? Right? Thousands of singular prayers have already been uttered on my behalf, without success. Maybe corporate prayers are required for success, but I have been lifted up in prayer by numerous churches over the years. Are their unified prayers not enough? All this praying, and no salvation or healing. What’s up with that?

I will await healing on April 1, 2026. Until then, I have a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis scheduled, along with an appointment with yet another neurologist in Toledo. I have faith, but my fingers are crossed.

You were once a Christian. You know how we lied when we said “I’ll pray for you.” We meant well, but quickly moved on to other needs. Of the thousands of people who said they would pray for me, it is doubtful that many of them ever did beyond a prayer for me while I was on their mind. If only they had prayed for me every day, God might have healed me.

If only! I admit, even when I stopped attending church I let my kids go to one. But one youth leader told my oldest, that they were just using words when they said “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” “Nah, that doesn’t really work anyway.” That was the end of that hypocrisy for me and my kids.

Interesting that you picked April Fools day.

Well if I didn’t live over 900 miles away I would be there. And I have prayed for you and will continue to pray for you.

You could drive here in a day. If you really cared for my soul, you’d be here.

Are you praying for Mr. Gerencer, or against him?

I caught both the 4/1 and 4:20 references – love it! I really do hope you find some relief from all of your suffering. No one deserves to live in pain.

Bruce as a Catholic I pray for everyone I know, myself included. That said, also wanting to be a decent human being, wouldn’t our world be a lot better off if people would just learn to respect other people’s boundaries? To me respecting someone’s boundaries is important. I apologize if I am not doing that appropriately now, but I thought my post would be helpful for this topic.

If you know someone is not religiously minded, then respect that and wish the person well instead of telling them you will be “praying for them”. I always cringe when, like yourself, I hear people purposely cross the line because they feel like whatever they say is alright because..”Jesus!”. This to me is the height of selfishness. Instead of maybe just listening to the other person and talking with them, they insist on taking the “opportunity” to evangelize.

If I know someone is religious, then definitely I will share with them likewise. But even then I have to be careful since to many religious folks someone like myself is not really a True Christian ®️.

If I am unsure, I will always err on the side of a general kind word. The last thing I want to do is make someone going through a bad situation feel even more discomfort.

I hope as always that you are doing well, and I also hope someday our medical profession will stop punishing people who are experiencing chronic pain by withholding the necessary medication from them.

Christians don’t know from boundaries, because they’re pushy salesmen for a defective product, and they’re all on commission [but they won’t get their commission till they’re dead].

I’m not going to argue, Asphalt. I grew up with the “hard sell” approach (which was referred to as “witnessing”). Even now it is something I am not comfortable with, because it is selling an invisible product with the promise of “certainty” based on very abstract beliefs. Everyone should have the right to determine their own path. I am not a fan of emotional intimidation one way or another regarding religion or non-religion. I don’t think it makes someone less of a Christian or atheist to respect another person’s known sensibilities.

Unfortunately in our current times respect gets equated with solidarity or validation. I am still old fashioned in this regard. I can keep company and respect someone despite whatever personal belief differences we may have, without trying to “convert” them. It is admittedly difficult to be open about a religious affiliation that doesn’t look like trying to sell that belief.

I read and participate on this page because I feel most folks (with the exception of Revival Liars and Dr. Tee) are good, decent and sincere people. I enjoy interacting with people like this. I also experienced my own share of religious nonsense when I was young. I wouldn’t call it “abuse”, but I feel like a defective product was pushed on a young mind in a sense, especially with the rapture right around the corner left behind fear inducing preaching I heard at the AOG church. I still struggle with this. Where is the line? I am not opposed to parents taking their children to church. But how far is too far? A child’s mind is impressionable and subject to manipulation by clever adults. I can’t give answers to this. I also don’t think politicians can either. It is something we as a society are going to have to wrestle with and find some kind of consensus on.

          Shorter God of Revival Fires:
“Ask Me for anything!… but don’t ask Me for anything… just in case it’s not My will for you to have anything… but ye have not because ye ask not… but ye ask wrongly”

If David Tee or Revival Fires showed up at your front door about to shit in their britches would you let them use the guest bathroom? 🚽 or he unmerciful and tell them to get off the porch.
