Health Update for Bruce Gerencser

As you may have noticed, I haven’t posted a meaningful post in nine days. Outside of my life partner, Polly, and my writing partner, Carolyn, I haven’t talked to family or friends about my current health status.

For new readers who may not know what’s ailing me, I am battling several diseases: gastroparesis (an incurable stomach disease that causes vomiting, nausea, satiation, weight loss); exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (a disease of the pancreas causing the insufficient production of digestive enzymes, leading to diarrhea, weight loss, and malnutrition); severe axonal neuropathy (a painful nerve disease in my legs and feet causing burning, numbness, and increased falls and injury); fibromyalgia (a chronic disease that causes widespread muscle pain/weakness and fatigue); osteoarthritis (a chronic degenerative disease affecting my joints causing pain and debility); degenerative spine disease (affecting my neck and spine causing pain and limited mobility); skin cancer (I have had five cancer surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, the last being surgery on my neck for melanoma three weeks ago). I am also being treated for high blood pressure and diabetes—both of which are well managed. My latest a1c was 5.8.

Of late, my pain levels have been impossible to manage. I could always take more narcotics—they work—but then I will spend my days unable to do anything other than exist and sleep. The rest of the stuff is out of my control. I regularly see my primary care doctor, take prescribed medications, eat properly, and sleep when I can. “Sleep when I can” means I sleep in short 1-3 hour blocks throughout the night, and then nap throughout the day. I am never not tired or fatigued.

Of late, I’ve been losing weight again. I have lost a total of 120 pounds. I’m down to what I weighed 30 years ago. I have little to no appetite, so eating has been reduced to “eating because I have too” unless I want to starve myself to death. My diarrhea and vomiting have gotten to the point that I fear going out in public lest I have an accident. Two weeks ago, I had an abdominal CT scan, with contrast. Down went the contrast, up came the contrast, in a waiting room of people. I was so embarrassed to make such a public scene. I’m a private person, so there’s the added psychological stress from embarrassing myself in front of others.

My daily life has come to a standstill. Three weeks of unopened mail sits on my desk. I haven’t filed our taxes—which I’ve done for 50 years. I contacted one local man about doing our taxes, but he wanted $250 to do them (W-2 wages, social security, one Schedule C for my blog income/expenses). That’s not going to happen, so I need a “good” day soon to file. Blog-wise, I haven’t answered reader emails in several months, and my writing output has declined 90 percent. Writing is one of the few pleasures I have in life, so I find the inability to do so distressing.

There’s no cure on the horizon. All doctors can do for me is help to manage my symptoms. There are days when I feel “this is it.” A week ago, for some unknown reason, my blood pressure dropped to 98/50, with a 120 resting pulse rate. I also had dangerously low blood sugar. I woke Polly up, stammering and unable to talk in complete sentences. She got me a Coke and some high carb junk food to eat, and my blood sugar rebounded to a low normal level. Polly took the day off of work to care for her dilapidated, but still s-e-x-y, man. Gotta have some humor, right? 😂

There are other problems I’m dealing with health-wise, but they are inconsequential compared to what I’ve shared above. I suspect it’s time to ask family to come in and help, but I find it difficult to make my problems theirs. They have their own lives to live. My family will say of me: “Bruce/Dad/Grandpa is a stubborn, prideful man who doesn’t like to ask for help.” When I was a strong buck, I was the master of my domain, but such is no longer the case. As anyone with chronic pain/health problems will tell you, one of the biggest problems to deal with is the inability to be self sufficient.

I hope to do some writing tomorrow. Of course, I’ve told Carolyn that every day for a week. Maybe Tuesday will be the day! 😂 I texted Carolyn earlier, “As you might have divined, rough days and nights lately. Still I hope, so tomorrow is another day to write.”

Thank you for the update Bruce, you and Polly are in our hearts and thoughts.
Please let your family help you. I know it’s hard to ask. You are a good man and a good father, they will be happy to help you. You took care of them when they were kids, give them a chance to pay you back. This is the cycle, how families work. After my mom died I lived with my dad so he could stay in his home and not have to move to assisted living or senior care, and so he wouldn’t be lonely. I did the housework and shopping as he had COPD and emphysema from smoking and physical challenges from being overweight. It was an honor and I was so glad to be able to be there for him. Please let your children and grandchildren honor you by helping you.
Call that guy and have him do your taxes, that’s something you don’t need to worry about.
Good night to you and Polly, until we hear from you again.

I’m sorry to hear of your health problems, although you have mentioned them in the past. Best wishes for getting some comfort from these problems.

Oh, Bruce … this stinks, and I’m so sorry. I’m reemerging from a ME/CFS flare, myself; I understand the disruptive nature of chronic illness. I also understand the concern of not wanting to burden others. I wish I’d spent more time in my youth figuring out how to extend my physical health, and less time fretting over my spiritual “salvation!”

May you find ease in accepting support from those who love you.

Bruce, I am sorry to hear that your health has declined. I think you do an amazing job keeping the page going considering all that you and Polly have had to deal with. I have an older cousin who has a saying (he is a Pastor of a very small church in rural KY)- “I’m rich in friends”.

Bruce, that really sucks. It also sucks to feel like you need to ask for help. Nobody likes feeling like they’re in the spot where they need help from others. We all miss you and wish you well.

  6. Ah, my friend, I’m so sorry to hear this. It sounds absolutely miserable. I hope you can get some relief, and the help and support you need.

Bruce, please don’t hesitate to ask your kids and their families to help you. Almost all of us get old and sick, and we have to accept the loss of our independence and make plans accordingly. It sucks, it really does. But you have a large contingent of relatives to call upon, luckily. I send you and Polly the very best wishes for peace of mind and comfort. ❤️❤️❤️

I’m so sorry Bruce. It does suck. I don’t think my health will improve much, I can just try to slow the deterioration. So I feel for you. I’ve had to step back from a lot of things, since dealing with Bob’s cancer (he’s now doing good!) and my hand surgery.

Thanks for all your work. I will continue to hope you are more comfortable. I’m glad you have such a large family nearby.

Really sorry to hear this Bruce. Your determination to continue, whilst all the time wishing it would just end, is an inspiration.

  11. Wishing I could help in some way. I hope you get through this downhill slide and level out some very soon.

This went to moderation. Do you usually write ✍️ your name as 1️⃣ word? If so, this time there was a space between Ami Mental. I corrected it. ❤️

Hello Bruce, I seen you post a few years back regarding Augie Jaxel. I wanted to inform you that he has gone home with the Lord. He passed away September 24, 2025. He told me stories regarding his airplane conversions, if you didn’t believe in the Lord when the plane whey landed he didn’t do his job. I had the opportunity to know Augie the last 24 years of his life. He had a stroke three years ago that severely limited his cognitive ability’s. The nearby neighbors were taking care of him shortly after the stroke but in my mind it wasn’t enough. I put my life on hold to be his live-in caregiver. This in my opinion was the best thing I’ve ever done. Though there were frustrations the joy of caring for A man that was the closest thing to a father that I’ve ever had, surpassed any so-called frustrations. Augie seemed to be getting better overtime and then his doctor recommended a watchman surgery to learn the chances of a future stroke. Unfortunately his left ventricle was too small for the device and they had to abort the surgery. About a month later he had a major stroke. The stroke occurred September 18, I quickly contacted the EMS and they transferred him to Saint Joseph’s hospital in Tucson. He was in a neurological ICU in a vegetative state Until his passing on the 24th.
I would like To thank you for sharing your positive memories of our friend August Jaxel.

The amount of pain and poor health you endure daily, Bruce, is so bad. It’s a happy start to my day when I take my first fix of caffeine to bed and open this blog and there’s a new post….but not when I read of the jaw-dropping pain, disabilities and discomforts you face daily. With all my good wishes to you.

As being 67 YO man flesh surrounding a 15 YO mind, I can say unequivocally, getting old sucks.
You are a far braver and stronger man than I ever will be Bruce Gerencser.

Your site has been an important source of information for me, as a once saved, and uninformed Carnal Christian, to evolving into an Atheist, it has and is insightful to have stumbled upon your site, (I watched you on You Tube as well) and learned some of the inner workings of a Pastor of Evangelical Churches.

Sadly the fairy tale of passing from an earthly body into some mystical and supernatural realm, at the foot of a God Daddy, is, well, a fairy tale.

I appreciate your sharing of information, convincing me that such beliefs are nonsense.

I prefer knowing that the reality of our human existence is terrestrial, evolved, and hard as hell, in that we are a cruel and hard species.

I do have empathy for people that are not liars, cheaters and thieves, and find, without knowing you outside of your site, that you fall into a category of what I like to think of as a REAL human being.

I applaud your efforts to be a man that attempts to share his terrestrial truth, to aid others in their journey in better understanding this life and world. and simply to say thank you.

🙁 Nothing much to add to what others have said, Bruce, but wishing you more good days than bad ones.

  17. Bruce, I wish I could solve your health problems. I hardly even know what to say except that I think of you and your family: amazing people, all of you !
