The Sounds of Fundamentalism: College Professors Are Intellectual Pedophiles by Lance Wallnau

This is the one hundred and forty-first installment in The Sounds of Fundamentalism series. This is a series that I would like readers to help me with. If you know of a video clip that shows the crazy, cantankerous, or contradictory side of Evangelical Christianity, please send me an email with the name or link to the video. Please do not leave suggestions in the comment section.  Let’s have some fun!

Today’s Sound of Fundamentalism is a video clip of Lance Wallnau speaking disparagingly about secular college professors. Wallnau sets up a straw man and then burns it down. Way to go Lance, Team Jesus® wins again!

I assume that the ‘Dr’ handle that appears alongside the picture of this guy is based on one of those fake awards.

The points he makes are rather the same as Dawkins makes about bringing children up to be religious being a form of abuse, but exactly in reverse. The trouble is that, objectively, his points are weak. He dismisses college professors as being 60s radicals who ‘profess’. Well the definition of professor in this context is very different from just ‘professing’, it is (usually) a very hard earned and academically challenging title. I’d also point out that without 60s radicals, America might still have segregation and be fighting in Vietnam.

More to the point is that educating children in religion is potentially harmful, certainly if it’s fundamentalist in nature, because it twists minds. This is something that is hard to address, because of course so many do it, but it is then for the rest of society to do that its best to instil this secular message; that evidence matters.

His “doctorate” is from Phoenix University of Theology. The school is not accredited is the classic sense of the word. they are accredited by God and an independent Christian accreditation company. The school’s founder had this to say about their doctorates:

“So you’ll go out with the Letter that says ‘Doctor.’ And you know what’s going to back up that letter? Not our signatures, but your gift, your faith, your presence, and your presentation of God’s call and purpose in your life. Amen.”

Wallnau says he received an M.A. From South Western Theological Seminary. I found no record for this institution. There is a Baptist institution, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. There is also a Southwestern Christian University. Both of these schools are accredited.

Wallnau does not mention his undergraduate degree.
